How to paint a room
As with any DIY task, preparation is key to creating a beautiful wall finish and the first step will be to decide on the paint. Of course, colour is important, but you should also consider the effect - glossy or matt, for example. If you're decorating a bathroom, be sure to select a paint that is suitable for use in damp areas.
Having the right tools to hand is also essential. Most painting projects will require a combination of brushes and rollers so you can quickly cover large sections of wall and take care of the smaller details.
If you opt for a decorating system, consider one with attachments that can be easily changed. This will allow you to switch between rollers and brushes with ease.
Before you start painting, move all your furniture away from the walls and lay down a drop cloth to protect your floor. Other things to do to prepare the room include removing switch and socket plates and masking off any details you don't want painted - such as skirting boards and cornices.
You will also need to clean your walls. Dust down the entire surface and wash any spots that are especially dirty. It may also be necessary to put a coat of primer on the wall, especially if you're opting for a lighter colour on a currently dark surface.
Once all the prep work is done, it's time to start decorating! To get a professional-looking finish, it is generally recommended that you begin with the edges, creating a border of around five to six cm wide. Then you can fill in the rest of the space with the roller.
By using a painting system, it's likely that a single coat will do the job nicely, but if another layer is required, you should allow some drying time in between - a couple of hours will usually suffice.
